We Are April Star

April Star was our childhood Cocker Spaniel, and her life taught me many important lessons. Most notably, she showed me that small beings like dogs possess innate, unconditional love and are entirely reliant on us for their well-being. A dog’s main goal seems to be enriching our lives.

I think of a parent or grandparent who looks forward with anticipation to interacting with their children or grandchildren and treasures each and every moment with them. I believe dogs embody this same spirit.

I have witnessed horrific abuse of dogs and a complete disregard for their welfare. The rules designed to protect them are not enforced. This issue is the elephant in the room that many people are quietly aware of in certain parts of California.

Our team is made up of dedicated dog lovers with hands-on experience and a deep understanding of each dog’s individual needs. Over time, we have built a strong network of volunteers, adopters, fosters, veterinarians, boarders, and many others who help make this work possible. Margaret handles our local and out of state adoptions and assists with various administrative duties.

By the end of September 2026, April Star Adoption Foundation had rescued 357 dogs, with 277 adopted into safe and loving homes.

Until now, our work has grown almost entirely through word of mouth and has been privately funded. As we move forward, we are opening the door to community support, with 100% of donations going directly toward the dogs’ most critical needs.

After all the abuse and stress these dogs have endured, it is amazing how quickly the vast majority of them bounce back with love and care.
